A 4-year-old girl and her 2-year-old brother died Tuesday after being swept downstream in a San Bernardino National Forest creek near Forest Falls, authorities said.
The children were playing in the Therman Flats Picnic Area, not far from the banks of Mill Creek, on Tuesday afternoon when their mother noticed the 4-year-old, who she was caring for, was missing, according to reports 2 year old son.
Officials said the mother searched for her daughter but could not find her. When she returned to the place where she left her son, he was also missing.
The woman frantically asked for help finding her children, but others at the park were unable to find them, officials said.
Local search and rescue teams quickly intervened, including the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Air Rescue Team and the U.S. Forest Service Rescue Team. About 40 minutes later, the two children were found downstream near the creek.
They were taken to a local hospital but were pronounced dead a short time later, officials said. The names of the mother and child have not been released.
