Simone Biles’ bid for a fourth gold medal at the Paris Olympics was thwarted on Monday when a mistake on the balance beam cost her a chance at victory and a podium finish.
Biles had a great chance at winning gold, but her former rival slipped on the mat. The only thing standing in her way is Italy’s Alice D’Amato, who hopes to make history for her country.

But Biles, an apparatus bronze medalist at the past two Olympics, slipped and fell from the beam. This mistake cost her the chance to get on the podium. Biles’ teammate Suni Lee also fell. Lee hit the crossbar and fell to the mat before getting back up and finishing her move.
This is the first time since 2000 that the U.S. team has not been on the podium.
Brazilian player Rebeca Andrade is the most likely player besides Biles to win this event. But Andrade also failed to reach the podium.

D’Amato shed tears when she realized she had won her country’s first gold medal in women’s gymnastics. She won the gold medal with a score of 14.366.
Italian gymnast Manila Esposito won the bronze medal with a throw of 14.000 meters.
China’s Zhou Yaqin won the silver medal in this event.
