Sony Music Publishing (SMP) now represents the legendary Otis Redding Records in the United States.
SMP has signed a publishing management agreement with the Estate of Otis Redding Jr., doing business as Big O Holdings LLC.
Redding is known for chart-topping singles including “Respect” (also a hit for Aretha Franklin), “Try A Little Tenderness” and “Hard To Handle”, a cover of the Black Crowes.
As a pioneer of soul and rhythm and blues music, Redding released his debut album “Pain In My Heart” in 1964, which also produced his first hit single “These Arms of Mine”.
Redding co-wrote “(Sitting’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” with Steve Cropper, which was released in 1968 following Redding’s death on December 10, 1967. The song reached number one on the pop and R&B charts and won two Grammy Awards in 1969.
A native of Macon, Georgia, Redding was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
“For over 50 years, I have worked hard to ensure that Otis’ legacy remains relevant and visible around the world. I feel that the Sony Music Publishing team can help my family in this never-ending endeavor.”
“As one of the most important songwriters of our lifetimes, Otis Redding remains an American treasure,” commented Jon Platt, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Publishing.
“Otis’ songs have shaped the cultural landscape across genres and generations, and it’s an honor to partner with the Redding family as the Native American custodians of this unique catalog of music.”
Brian Monaco, President of Sony Music Publishing and Worldwide Chief Marketing Officer, added: “Otis Redding was a rare talent whose songs were unquestionably brilliant and whose lasting impact remains today. Strong.
“We are honored to join forces with the Redding family to represent his work and cement his legacy as one of the most iconic songwriters in American history.”global music business
