Californians who want to enjoy fireworks on the Fourth of July will have plenty of options Thursday, depending on where they live.
Although setting off fireworks is illegal in the city of Los Angeles, no matter what your neighbors on the street are doing or saying, approximately 300 cities across the state allow the sale and possession of legal fireworks that comply with state fire marshal “safety” regulations. ” seal of approval.

Depending on the location, specific time restrictions may be in effect, so anyone wishing to set off fireworks should check with their local fire department for all information. Dry brush and other flammable materials can ignite with the right spark, and children should never handle fireworks without parental supervision, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
According to Cal Fire, anyone caught violating the state’s fireworks laws faces a fine of up to $50,000, up to a year in jail, or both.
The agency has additional advice for anyone who wants to set off legal fireworks during the holidays:
- Once the fuse is lit, do not place any part of your body on the fireworks
- Back up! Light the fireworks and take a step back
- Do not set off fireworks and firecrackers at others
- Do not attempt or attempt to relight fireworks
- Don’t wear loose clothes
- Never carry fireworks in your pocket
