House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) condemned the congressman’s fiery remarks during a House hearing. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Marjorie Taylor Greene exchanged sarcastic remarks and said members needed to behave politely.
“This does not bode well for Congress,” Johnson told reporters on Friday.
The Republican spokesman condemned both parties, saying that while “robust debate” was welcome, “we must treat each other with dignity and respect.”
“Decentness is an important principle to uphold,” he said.
“I think we need people on both sides of the aisle to cut through the emotion. We can have a robust debate. That’s what this institution is built on. But you know, we have to treat each other as equals with dignity and respect,” Johnson said.

The hearing quickly spiraled out of control after Greene fired shots at her Democratic colleague, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Mo.
“Do you know what we’re here for?” Crockett asked Green, who retorted: “I think your false eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer groaned in the chamber, pleading to maintain order.
Ocasio-Cortez weighed in: “I do have a point of order and I want to take down Ms. Green’s words. This is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack another person’s appearance… move her words away.”
“Are your feelings hurt?” Green asked.

“Oh girl, baby girl!” Ocasio-Cortez fired back. “You’re not even allowed to play games!”
Ocasio-Cortez pushed for Greene’s comments to be “taken down,” a process that gives speakers the opportunity to retract remarks or make changes if they are deemed inappropriate.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., ruled that the remarks did not violate House rules prohibiting the participation of “celebrities” during debates.
The hearing recommended that Attorney General Merrick Garland be held in contempt of court on a party-line vote of 24-20.
Crockett reacts to the commotion on X.
“So MTG wants to talk about my performance on COMMITTEE?!” Crockett wrote on X. “This is what happens when mentally deficient people can’t read and follow the rules or just don’t care… and somehow end up in Congress!”.
“Disagreements are part of democracy, but the hearing devolved into outright diatribes and insults about members of Congress’ appearance,” Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) wrote on X. kind of confusion.
