The U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday to review Tennessee’s ban on puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgeries for minors.
US v. Skrmetti is set to go to trial in October.
This is the first time the high court has considered restrictions on puberty blockers, hormonal treatments and surgeries for minors.
Tennessee is one of 22 states that have taken steps to ban such medical interventions on minors.
A federal appeals court allowed the Tennessee and Kentucky laws to take effect pending the outcome of ongoing litigation.
Actor Elliot Page, one of those who filed an amicus brief opposing the state’s law, is one of 57 transgender people who have joined the lawsuit in support of the Biden administration.
In documents filed with the high court, the government said 25 states have laws that limit or prohibit the provision of “gender-affirming health care” to transgender youth. South Carolina passed the law last week.
