Switzerland won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Swiss rapper and singer Nemo’s song “The Code” impressed the jury and the public at the popular annual event in Malmö, Sweden, on Saturday.
“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever experienced,” the 24-year-old singer said at the postgame press conference.
The Code explores the artist’s non-binary identity through a gorgeous mashup of opera, rap, drum & bass, and electronic dance music.
Nemo is one of two non-binary singers competing in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest finals, the other being Ireland’s Bambie Thug.
Switzerland narrowly beat pre-tournament favorites Croatia – receiving 591 votes to the runners-up’s 547 – in a game that was not without controversy.
Security measures for Eden Golan, an immigrant from Israel, are very strict. She received some boos and heads-downs during her performance, but came out on top at the event, placing fifth with 375 votes.
Days before the final, thousands of protesters opposed to Israel’s war in Gaza rallied outside Malmö Stadium, calling for Israel to be disqualified.
Meanwhile, Dutch player Joost Klein was disqualified hours before the final due to a complaint from a female production team member. Police said they are investigating.
