Officials on Monday were searching for a teen who went missing Sunday night while swimming in Huntington Beach.
Huntington Beach Public Information Officer Jennifer Carey said two swimmers went into the water, but only one came back. She said there were strong rip currents earlier in the day.
The U.S. Coast Guard began searching for the 15-year-old boy, who was last seen near Lifeguard Tower 11, around 9:45 p.m., according to Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist Richard Uranga. The Huntington Beach Fire Department also assisted in the search.
The water search was called off around 10:40 p.m., but land and air searches continued, Carey said.
Coast Guard air and patrol units and their response vessels have been searching the area. The search is expected to continue until at least Monday afternoon, when the Coast Guard captain and search and rescue coordinator will decide whether to suspend efforts, Umhlanga said.
The identity of the missing teen has not been released, but Umhlanga said he is an Orange County resident.
