Tesla is recalling more than 125,000 vehicles to fix seat belt warning systems that may increase the risk of injury in a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall includes some 2012-2024 Model S, 2015-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles.
Seat belt warning systems should provide drivers with visual seat belt reminder signals to remind them that their seat belts are not fastened. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that on some vehicles, the audible and visual seat belt reminders do not sound when they should, which does not meet federal safety requirements.
NHTSA said that as of Tuesday, Tesla had discovered 104 warranty claims that may be related to the condition. The company is not aware of any collisions, deaths or injuries that may be related to the situation.
Tesla, led by billionaire Elon Musk, plans to deploy free over-the-air software updates to affected vehicles starting in June. The software update will eliminate the software’s reliance on the driver’s seat occupancy switch and rely solely on the driver’s seat belt buckle and ignition status to activate the seat belt reminder signal.
Last month, Tesla recalled 3,878 2024 Cybertrucks after discovering that the accelerator pedal could become stuck, potentially causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally and increasing the risk of a crash.
In February, NHTSA announced a recall of nearly 2.2 million Tesla vehicles sold in the United States because some warning lights on the dashboard were too small. The agency also said at the time that it had upgraded its investigation into Tesla’s steering problems in 2023 to an engineering analysis, moving one step closer to a recall.
In April, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it was investigating whether Tesla’s Autopilot driving system, recalled last year, was adequate to ensure drivers pay attention to the road.
