Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was “shocked” after she was attacked on a Copenhagen street, her office said.
The attack took place in a city center square when a man walked up to her and punched her.
The attacker has been arrested.
EU President Charles Michel and European Parliament President Roberta Mesola called the attack “shocking”.
“Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted by a man and subsequently arrested in Kurtovet, Copenhagen on Friday night. The Prime Minister is shocked by the incident,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement, but did not Provide more details.
Police said they had arrested a man and were investigating the incident, but declined to provide further information.
“She seemed a little stressed,” Søren Shergaard, a barista in the square, told Reuters after seeing the prime minister being escorted away.
The attack occurred two days before Denmark’s EU election vote.
Ms Frederiksen had earlier campaigned for the European elections with leading Social Democratic candidate Christel Schaldemose, according to Danish TV2.
Her Social Democrats are the largest party in the coalition. They still lead in the polls, but their support has plummeted in recent months.
Danish Environment Minister Magnus Scheunik told
EU President Charles Michel said on X that he was “angry”.
“I strongly condemn this cowardly act of aggression,” he said.
