The winners of the 47th Annual Kennedy Center Honors have been announced.
The Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award will honor director and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola; blues singer-songwriter and guitarist Bonnie Raitt; jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer Arturo Sandoval; Apollo Theater will receive special honors from “an iconic American institution”; and the four surviving members of the counterculture rock band the Grateful Dead.
Guitarist Bob Weir, who is bringing “The Dead” tracks to the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra in 2022, told NPR he was speechless and deeply moved by the experience. Deeply grateful to the “Deadheads” who have supported the band for nearly sixty years, as well as to his deceased.
“Not so long ago, we were outsiders. That’s all changed now,” Will said. “We’re more or less accepted into the American musical tradition, and that’s how we’ve always been.”
