The southernmost home in the continental United States is on the market for $18.5 million.
This 4,008 square foot home sits on less than half an acre in the heart of Key West, Florida, near the southernmost buoy where the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico meet. Built in 1958, this mid-century style home has become a historical landmark due to its location.
The estate is owned by Cecilia Joyce Johnson, a member of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical group and the widow of the late American artist Seward Johnson II. The latter died in 2020.
According to property records obtained by Mansion Global, the Johnson family purchased the home in the 1990s and used it as a second home. Cecilia Joyce Johnson is listed as the seller of the property.
Ellen Gvili of Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty represented the listing.
In a statement to the New York Post, Gwiley described the property as a “rare find in Key West.”
“Most of the waterfront lots are either naval bases or hotels, so it’s difficult to find private homes in such a location,” Gwiley said.
The multifamily residence includes five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms.
Gvili said the interior design blends historic charm with modern elegance. The design of the formal living room reflects the modernist Hemingway era. On the other side of the living room is the Florida room, which offers views of the home’s tropical surroundings.
Other interior features include cathedral ceilings, stone floors and skylights. Facilities include a large 50 x 20 foot swimming pool, an outdoor seating area and a large balcony with views of the hotel and the Atlantic Ocean.
According to Mansion Global, the property has a license, providing future investment opportunities as it allows night and holiday rentals. The home requires some renovations to the seawall and dock that were damaged from previous hurricanes.
