I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say that not everyone agrees on the best way to deal with your computer’s junk directory. Some people like to give it up until their computer yells at them about storage space, while others empty it every day. I’m somewhere in the middle, but I try not to let it go too far. I think a few days ago I found the perfect tool for the job: Bananabin.
When the data saved in the Trash folder exceeds a certain threshold, animated buzzing flies will appear around Bananabin, which you can shoo away with your mouse. That’s it. This is the app.
You can configure the flight threshold via the app’s icon in the menu bar; the three options are Gatekeeper Mode (10MB), Recycler Mode (1GB), and Trash Hoarder Mode (10GB). The app is currently free but is still in beta. Leon Schrijvers, one of the developers of Bananabin, said in an email edge They are still working out some bugs (hehe). If you keep the folder in the iCloud Trash, the flies won’t appear, and if you keep the folder on an external drive, the flies won’t appear. Additionally, it currently only works on macOS Sonoma, although they are considering adding support for macOS Ventura later.
Note: Bananabin requires accessibility and full disk access to operate. The app’s website says this allows it to find the Trash directory and check if it’s full. This seems to make sense, but it’s something you need to know in case it’s a deal-breaker for you.
If that sounds ok to you, you can try the app by visiting Bananabin’s website (linked here again). You must provide your email address to receive the download link.
