TikTok is expanding its capabilities with a new tool called “Sound Search,” which allows users to identify songs by singing, humming or playing them.
The video-sharing platform confirms the new feature technology blog, TikTok is a response to popular music recognition apps such as Shazamand YouTube MusicThe recently launched music search function has similar functions to the TikTok tool. Currently, the YouTube tool is only available to YouTube Music subscribers on iOS and Android.
Meanwhile, TikTok’s sound search is still in beta and is only available to a limited number of users in certain regions. TechCrunch said the new tool can help users discover and better understand TikTok’s rapidly changing song-based trends.
To access voice search, users can click the microphone icon in the TikTok search bar and select the appropriate option.
Similar to YouTube Music’s song detection feature, Sound Search enables users to enter melodies and receive song suggestions. However, TikTok’s tool goes a step further and links the identified song directly to the related TikTok video.
Preliminary testing was conducted by TechCrunch It was revealed that sound search can effectively identify popular songs that are frequently used on the platform. For example, the tool accurately identified Rihanna’s umbrella and the iconic “oh no oh no oh no no no” sound.
However, the tool shows limitations when dealing with less popular songs. When tested with Hilary Duff fly, The news outlet said a sound search identified the song but failed to show a related video, instead providing generic search results for the word “flight.”
TikTok clarifies TechCrunch Sound Search is designed for song identification rather than TikTok-specific sounds. Nonetheless, the tool has demonstrated the ability to recognize and process popular TikTok sounds and memes.
It’s unclear when TikTok plans to make sound search available to all users. However, given the importance of sound in driving TikTok trends and the feature’s potential to boost song discovery, it seems likely that a wider release will be coming in the near future.
In addition to sound search, TikTok is testing several other features designed to expand its content capabilities. These include 60-minute video uploads, allowing creators to experiment with longer-form content, and “Sub Space,” an exclusive chat room for paying fans, a feature confirmed in February.
In addition, it was reported in January this year that TikTok was testing a feature called “AI Song” that uses a large language model to generate lyrics based on text input.
