Daily Wordle Tips
I’ve written a lot about Wordle – from covering the 1,000th word to my list of the best words to get started, to helpful two-step strategies, to news about controversial word changes. I even summarized what I learned from playing the popular online word puzzle for an entire year. So if you’re reconsidering your need for real answers, you can try the tips from one of the stories.
Do you still need an opening statement? One person told me that they just looked around and chose a five-letter object they found as their starting word—like a couch or a chair. I tend to stick to starting words with the most common letters in English words. I like TRAIN as a launcher, although I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I’ve read people use the financial term ROATE, but I like to use a single word I actually know.
What is wordle?
If you’ve read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback as to whether the letters you guessed are in the puzzle and whether they are in the same position as you guessed. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle in 2022 for seven figures. 12,000 five-letter words were narrowed down to 2,500 and an answer database was created. It’s also convenient that his name echoes the word “mono”.
A Times spokesperson told me it listed the first Wordle on June 19, 2021, and celebrated the game’s 1,000th word on March 15. ERUPT. For example, “If Wordle gets too tough and loses his streak, Dad will explode.”
There are other interesting games at Times Games. My latest obsession is Connections, which I think is trickier than Wordle. In this game, you look at a grid of 16 words and try to sort them into four groups of related words. Sometimes the relationship between the words is very obvious – like when all four words started with rock band, like “Rushmore” and “journeyman.” (Links to all-emoji puzzles get a little trendy around April Fools’ Day. Some gamers don’t find this very funny.)
The Spelling Bee is also a popular Age game. There’s also a new game, Strands, which is still in beta and I’m trying to get the hang of it.
