The title of “world’s fastest man” will be contested on Sunday to underline the excitement of the Paris Olympics. The 100m dash is always a spectacular event and there’s no reason to think there won’t be three of the top American runners taking part this year.
The swimming pool has been the scene of many exploits. One of Paris’ stars, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, will be looking to add the 50m freestyle gold to her 100m gold.
It’s a typical Sunday filled with baseball games, with the National Night Game taking place between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs.
Olympic men’s 100 meter dash
Almost everyone outside the tournament predicted that Jamaican star Keyshane Thompson (-160) would win. He had the fastest time of the year (9.77 seconds) but was only tied by 10 seconds in Saturday’s heat.
Maybe Thompson was just conserving energy for Sunday’s semifinals and finals, as he posted the sixth-fastest time. He may approach the semi-finals the same way, as the opponent is Italy’s defending gold medalist Marcel Jacobs (+4000), who clocked 10.05 seconds and placed 13th.
Noah Lyles (+130) is considered the top American player, but Kenny Bednarek (+1800) and 2021 silver medalist Fred Kerley (Fred Kerley) (+1500) Definitely means they shouldn’t be ignored. The two tied for the top time on Saturday at 9.97 seconds, with Lyles finishing 12th at 10.04 seconds.
Jamaica’s Oblique Seville (+1100) also posed a threat after finishing fifth in 9.99 seconds. Lyles is competing in his first Olympics, and someone like Kerley has already had the pressure of a final and could be the one to put pressure on Thompson.
Fred Kerley, +1500 (DraftKings)

Olympic women’s 50m freestyle
Was the event even necessary after Sarah Sjostrom (-2000) set an Olympic record in Saturday’s semifinal? The Swedish star clocked 23.66 seconds in the semi-heat, breaking Australian Emma McKean’s record of 23.81 seconds set in Tokyo.
Oh, and yes, Sjostrom still holds the world record of 23.61 seconds. So I guess the big suspense is whether she can break her world record. Then again, there were seven other people planning on jumping into the pool as well.
American Simone Manuel did not advance to the finals, finishing 18th in 24.87 seconds. She won a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro but is now unable to crack the top 16.
That leaves Gretchen Walsh (+1,400) as Team USA’s upset hope. It would go down as one of the most shocking events in swimming history. In fact, Walsh is competing for silver.

British stone. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
Maybe the Cubs have gotten a head start on this season’s collapse. A year ago, they went 1-6 in a September game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who barely clinched the final National League wild-card spot and made it to the World Series ( World Series ), thus falling out of the playoff mix.
Chicago finished last in the NFC Central region despite winning two of its first three games in this series. Nolan Arenado’s short fly hit Chicago center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to score two in the eighth inning as the Cardinals won 5-4 on Saturday. Baserunner Nico Hoerner hit a two-run single.
The Cardinals will take advantage of those breaks as the NFC wild-card race is tight again, with St. Louis two games back of the final spot. The Cardinals had lost seven of their last 11 games before getting proactive help from the Cubs.
St. Louis right-hander Myles Mikolas (8-8, 4.99 ERA) will face Chicago left-hander Justin Steele (2-5, 3.38). On July 14, Mikolas hit four home runs in a loss to the Cubs, including two bombs from Crowe Armstrong, but in 20 career games against Chicago, he hit 6 Leading the way with 5 wins and a 3.00 ERA. Steele has started in six career games against the Cardinals and is 4-1 with a 3.47 ERA. It was his first of the season.
