Donald Trump says he has agreed to Fox News’ proposal to debate Vice President Kamala Harris on September 4.
A debate between the former president and current Joe Biden was scheduled to take place on rival ABC News on September 10, with Ms Harris agreeing to take Mr Biden’s place.
But Trump said the ABC debate had been “terminated” because of Biden’s withdrawal from the race. Ms. Harris has not yet commented on Fox News’ new proposal.
With Ms Harris’ election, the two candidates will vie for the presidency on November 8. Officially selected as the Democratic candidate on Friday.
If the Fox News debate goes ahead, it will be the second presidential debate of the election cycle and the first between Ms Harris and Mr Trump.
The meeting is expected to be held in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania, and the location has not yet been determined. Trump wrote that the moderators will be Fox News’ Bret Baier and Martha McCallum and the rules will be similar to his debate with Biden.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social social network: “If Kamala for any reason is unwilling or unable to debate on that day, I have given Fox permission to hold a large town hall debate on the evening of September 4th.
Biden withdrew from the presidential race on July 21, saying it was “in the best interest of my party and the country.”
His decision follows weeks of speculation about his health, following incoherent remarks during a debate with Trump and subsequent gaffes in public appearances.
He endorsed Ms. Harris, who went on to win the support of the Democratic establishment and was formally selected as the Democratic nominee on Friday.
At a campaign rally in Atlanta on Wednesday, Ms Harris Challenge Trump to debate hersaid: “If you have something to say, please say it in front of me.”
