More than a dozen allies of former U.S. President Donald Trump, including Rudy Giuliani, are expected to appear in an Arizona court on Tuesday on charges brought against them related to the 2020 election.
They are accused of running a “disinformation scheme” in which they allegedly conspired to falsely claim Trump won Arizona.
This is the fourth state to try Republican officials for election interference.
It did not bring charges against Trump.
But he is believed to be one of the unindicted co-conspirators listed in the sweeping indictment released last month.
In all, Arizona has charged 18 Republicans with claiming that Trump won Arizona when in fact Democratic nominee President Joe Biden won the state by more than 10,000 votes.
Mr. Giuliani is expected to appear in a Phoenix, Arizona, courtroom on Tuesday morning for an arraignment hearing. He was not formally notified of the charges until Friday, when he received the documents after his 80th birthday party.
Four other high-profile officials, including Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows, are expected to appear in court in June.
Arizona joins Georgia, Michigan and Nevada in bringing charges against Republican officials accused of trying to prevent Biden from winning.
The state says 11 Republicans submitted a document to Congress falsely claiming they were Arizona’s true electors and saying they cast the state’s electoral votes for Donald Trump.
