ROMhacking.net, a longtime mainstay in the online classic gaming world, was closed for most of Saturday. Nightcrawler, the creator and operator of ROMhacking, has announced that the site has stopped accepting community modifications of classic games and will only publish future news.
Nightcrawler said the site’s collection can be found at the Internet Archive (incredibly, all 20 years of hacks and other files are gathered together in a single 11.7GB zip file.) He added that the forum will Stay open and downloadable content will continue to exist. Otherwise, the site is in read-only mode.
Nightcrawler blamed the site’s shutdown on “24/7 usage, endless queues and endless inboxes” as well as “legal burdens.” He also accused members of a group willing to take over management of the site of doxxing him and conspiring to remove him from the site. A member of the group refuted his accusations in a series of posts on X.
