A fire broke out in Bucheon, South Korea, killing seven people and injuring more than a dozen others.
After two people jumped on an air mattress provided by the fire station, the mattress flipped, killing them.
The other victims were found in an eighth-floor room and the fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
Although the fire did not spread throughout the building, the damage was extensive because the rooms were not equipped with sprinklers.
The nine-story hotel was built in 2003, before sprinkler requirements were enshrined in law, according to the city’s fire department.
The department said the fire was first reported at 19:39 local time (11:39 GMT) and was extinguished at 22:26 on Thursday.
Police are investigating whether the hotel’s manager committed any negligence.
The fire department’s use of air mattresses is also under investigation.
According to reports, a female victim grabbed a corner of the mattress when she landed, causing the mattress to flip and the other male victim to jump.
The injured are being treated in hospital with serious injuries, some of which were caused by smoke inhalation.
