SAINT-DENIS, France – The United States women’s rugby sevens team has brought the country its first medal.
In the end, the United States defeated the Australian team in dramatic 14-12, beating the 2016 gold medalists to take the bronze medal. Alex Sedrick’s late try and winning conversion gave the United States a late lead.
The U.S. players showed emotion at the Stade de France after the win. They rushed onto the field and Bruce Sting’s “Born in the U.S.A.” blared throughout the stadium. On the field, Ilona Maher raised her hands above her head to express victory.
Earlier in the day, the United States lost to defending Olympic champion New Zealand 24-12 in the semifinals. A gold medal match ensued between New Zealand and Canada. In the end, New Zealand won the gold medal and Canada won the silver medal.
