Britain is voting in a parliamentary election that could fundamentally reshape its politics. Fourteen years after entering government and five years after Boris Johnson’s landslide victory, the centre-right Conservatives are struggling to hold on to constituencies they have controlled for decades.
Opinion polls suggest the centre-left Labor Party will return to power on promises including ending tax exemptions for private schools and taking most railway companies into public ownership.
But while some predictions suggest Labor will win a landslide majority, that is getting further and further away from a two-party contest. In addition to the centrist Lib Dems, Greens and pro-independence parties in Scotland and Wales, pro-Palestinian candidates from the far-right UK Reform Party and the Labor left are also expected to win seats.
The New York Times will be watching to see whether Labor performs on the scale predicted and for signs of further adjustments ahead.
