Russian troops attacked a supermarket in the northern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv with two glide bombs, killing at least two people, local officials said.
A fire broke out at the Epicentr K home improvement store in the city’s northern suburbs.
Ukrainian President Zelensky said that more than 200 people may have been inside the supermarket when it was attacked.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote on Telegram: “A large number of people are missing. Many people are injured.
“This is pure terrorism,” Mr Terekhov said.
President Zelensky added: “This attack on Kharkiv is another manifestation of Russian madness.
“Only crazy people like it [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has the ability to kill people and terrorize people in this way.
The attack will highlight Ukrainian anxieties over the lack of adequate air defense systems.
Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine needs to be able to defend itself and needs air defense systems provided by Western allies.
The attack is another sign of Russia’s growing confidence.
As Ukraine awaits the arrival of more Western weapons on the front lines, its military appears to be taking advantage of the window of opportunity to expand its advantage.
Glide bombs are based on old Soviet bombs and add folding wings and satellite navigation capabilities. They are cheap but destructive.
