Russian officials said they shot down 144 Ukrainian drones across the country overnight, in a wave of attacks that killed one woman, set residential buildings on fire and grounded Moscow flights.
Moscow Governor Andrei Vorobyov said several apartments in two high-rise apartment buildings in Raminskoye, in the Moscow region, were set on fire.
Vorobyov said that a 46-year-old woman in Ramenskoye died, three people were injured, and 43 others were evacuated to temporary accommodation centers.
Ukraine has so far not commented on the attack.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that of the 144 drones intercepted by its air defense systems, half were in the western border area of Bryansk, 20 were in Moscow and 14 were over the Kursk region.
State media reported that the strike resulted in the closure of four Moscow airports and the suspension of more than 30 domestic and international flights serving the Russian capital.
Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsia confirmed on Telegram on Tuesday morning that the three airports of Domodedovo, Zhukovsky and Vnukovo have resumed operations.
The Ukrainian Air Force stated on Telegram that its air defense system shot down 38 of the 46 “Shahid” attack drones launched by Russia.
They were shot down over various regions and cities including Kiev, Odessa, Kherson, Sumy, Kharkiv and Poltova.
Russia also fired an Iskander-M ballistic missile and a Kh-31 air-to-surface missile, the air force added.
Ukraine and Russia regularly launch nighttime drone attacks on each other’s territory.
The latest wave of drone strikes comes as Moscow claims to have made progress in eastern Ukraine.
On Sunday, Russia said it had taken control of the village of Novorodivka, just 10 kilometers from the main town. pokrovsk. Kyiv has yet to comment, but sources told the BBC that Ukrainian troops had withdrawn from there.
So far this month, Russia has launched a wave of deadly attacks in Lviv, Poltava and Kharkiv.
