The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), passed a resolution calling on Iran to urgently cooperate and reverse its decision to ban some inspectors.
There are concerns that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.
The resolution was drafted by the United Kingdom, France and Germany and passed by the 35-nation Council, with 20 countries voting in favor and only China and Russia voting veto. Twelve countries abstained from the vote and one did not participate.
Iran called the decision “hasty and unwise,” according to Iranian state television.
The resolution, adopted at a quarterly meeting in Vienna, said Iran must urgently, fully and unequivocally cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
It also said Tehran should answer long-standing questions about uranium traces found at two sites and allow some of the agency’s most experienced enrichment inspectors to return to the country.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iran is currently enriching uranium to a purity of 60%, close to the 90% required for weapons grade, while continuing to accumulate a large stockpile of uranium.
The motion aims to increase diplomatic pressure on Iran.
In a separate joint statement, France, Germany and Britain urged Iran to “cease nuclear escalation” and refrain from threatening to produce nuclear weapons.
“Much of Iran’s nuclear program is unprecedented for a country without a nuclear weapons program,” the report said.
“The production of uranium metal is a critical step in the development of nuclear weapons. We urge Iran not to pursue this work again.”
The United States, which supported the resolution, expressed concern that Iran might respond with a nuclear escalation.
Similar resolutions and sanctions have prompted Tehran to retaliate in the past Remove the monitor and Increase uranium enrichment.
Iranian state television reported on Wednesday that Iran’s mission to the United Nations said: “The decision of Western countries is hasty and unwise, which will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the diplomatic contacts and constructive cooperation process (between Iran and the opposition).”) “.
