If you primarily watch TV through streaming services like Netflix and Max, you may be missing out on one of cable’s great social features—Live TV.
Launched in 2017, YouTube TV gives you what you’re missing without cable TV. You choose the plan that’s right for you, and you’ll have entertainment, news, live sports, and more at your fingertips. It’s similar to other live TV streaming services such as Hulu + Live TV. Now you don’t have to mute dozens of words on social media to watch your favorite shows.
Why I finally switched from Sling to YouTube TV
If you’re considering subscribing to YouTube TV, here’s what you need to know before signing up.
How much does YouTube TV cost?
YouTube TV’s base plan starts at $72.99 per month (currently $57.99 for the first three months) and increases with each add-on you choose. Prices have more than doubled since launch (originally $35 per month in 2017) and have increased multiple times over the past few years through various licensing agreements.
What can you watch on YouTube TV?
It depends on the add-ons you choose, but YouTube TV lets you stream more than 100 channels of live and local sports, news, and shows. Basic plans include major networks like NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX, as well as sports networks like ESPN, NBA, MLB and NFL – and YouTube TV is the exclusive home of NFL Sunday Ticket 2023. Channels including PBS, TNT, BET, TBS, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon.
Additional networks include AMC+, HBO Max, Shudder, STARZ, Fox Soccer Plus, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, and more, each with its own price point.
Mix and match speed of light
Of course, each region has different local and regional programming listings, but you can see what networks are available through YouTube TV in your area by entering your zip code on their website.
You also have unlimited space to store your recordings, allowing you to rewind, fast forward and pause at any time – your recordings will be retained for nine months.
How many people can use YouTube TV?
The basic plan includes three simultaneous streams, which means one person can watch on their phone, while another can watch in their living room and a third can watch on their laptop. There are six accounts per household.
What are the disadvantages of YouTube TV?
Add-ons aren’t included, so if you want to upgrade your TV experience by adding Internet, sports, Spanish-language TV, and 4K, you’ll have to pay some extra money. And, when you’re already starting at $73 per month, these add-ons can really add up.
YouTube also recently made ads on YouTube TV unskippable.
