The New York Yankees have added a bat to the MLB trade deadline, agreeing to trade All-Star outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. with the Miami Marlins.
According to ESPN, the Marlins traded Chisholm for three Yankees prospects, including catcher Augustin Ramirez.
Even though New York is 60-45 this season, it still needs help at the plate. Players like infielder DJ LeMahieu, outfielder Alex Verdugo and others have struggled to move forward, and the Yankees are no longer the team that was shot out of the cannon when the 2024 season began.

Enter Chisholm, a 26-year-old who can play in all situations and provides a reliable left-handed bat to head coach Aaron Boone’s lineup. Chisholm hit 14 doubles, 13 home runs and 50 RBIs in 101 games for the Marlins this season, slashing .249/.323/.407.
However, Chisholm didn’t have a great month of July, hitting .198 in 94 games, although he did hit .309 thanks to 12 at-bats.
Despite Clayton Kershaw’s encouraging debut, Dodgers need another ace
Chisholm also provides speed on the basepaths, an area the Yankees lack considering they rank 29th in stolen bases this season. Chisholm stole 22 bags, tied for 12th in MLB. As a team, the Yankees have 43 games this year.
It will be interesting to see how the Yankees deploy Chisholm on the field.
Chisholm began his MLB career as an infielder and played second base and shortstop for the Marlins during his first three seasons. However, when 2023 arrived, Chisholm was moved to midfield, where it has been his primary position ever since.
The Yankees’ outfield features Verdugo in left field, Aaron Judge in center field and Juan Soto in right field. Boone might consider creating a designated hitter carousel to allow players to take a break while rotating players in the outfield to keep their legs fresh.
But considering Verdugo batted .178 in June and has an on-base percentage of .287 this season, maybe Soto could move to left field, Judge returns to his normal position in right field, and Chisholm takes on center field duties. .
Third base is also a glaring hole for the Bronx Bombers, but Chisholm has yet to play there once in his career. That could mean general manager Brian Cashman wants to acquire more than one bat to help his struggling lineup make the playoffs.
The Yankees intend to acquire Chisholm, but he is not a rental. Chisholm still has two years of team control before hitting free agency in 2027, which is why it took three rookies to get the deal done.
Chisholm, like the other players in the Yankees clubhouse, has a distinct personality that suits the bright lights of New York. Yankees fans will welcome this as long as Chisholm is still producing.
