Real estate is all about location, and Zillow’s new commute time filter helps homebuyers find the perfect home that’s closest to their job, school, doctor’s office, favorite coffee shop, or best friend’s apartment.
“As many people gradually return to the rhythm of office life, the all-important question arises again: How far is too far from work?” the announcement reads. “Zillow has the answer with its new Commute Time Filter, a feature on the Zillow app designed to help you find a home or rental within your desired commute time or near the places that matter most to you. .
First, users must go to the Filters tab on the right side of the Zillow mobile app. Near the bottom of the list, they’ll see a “Commute Time” category where they can enter a work address or another location they want to be close to.
From there, they will be asked to provide their mode of travel (i.e. driving, biking, walking or public transport), whether they will commute during peak or off-peak hours, and their longest preferred commute. After applying filters, they will see all available listings that meet their commuting needs.
Zillow said its 2023 Consumer Housing Trends Survey showed that 53% of homebuyers “cite commute time as a top priority” when choosing their next home. Walkability (67%), proximity to leisure activities (60%), family and friends (57%) and public transport (43%) also played an important role in buyer decisions.
Zillow said these factors have all become increasingly important since 2018, with proximity to public transportation showing the largest growth, increasing 13 percentage points from 2018 (30%) to 2023 (43%).
